BridgeCat is an award-winning innovation aimed at improving resilience at key flooding hotspots. A partnership between the Department for Transport, Gaist and Cumbria County Council, this mobile bridge inspection system uses sonar, an underwater camera and sensors, to measure the damage caused by floodwater. The project, which was prompted by the devastation caused by the 2015/6 winter storms which damaged hundreds of bridges and left communities isolated, won the 2018 New Civil Engineer Tech Fest, Judge’s Supreme award and continues to receive awards for its innovation.
